Declined in the feminine form until the late 19th century, and still used in local dialect, it is an ancient name of Latin origin: Liquentia, meaning flowing or clear. The Livenza has fascinated mankind since prehistoric times and was a crucial waterway, first for the Romans and then for the Serenissima Republic of Venice.
It rises at the foot of the Pordenone mountains and, as it flows, creates a remarkable wealth of natural habitats, a refuge for flora and fauna.
The images in this book are a tribute to the natural heritage of the river and its adjacent environments—not only its waters, but also the precious vegetation along its banks.
A photographic vision of the Alto Livenza, from its legendary sources to the prehistoric site of Palù (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and the Palù Biotope, the kingdom of amphibians.
